Clean Water, Scarcity, and Market Prices

When we fail to understand the basics of scarcity & prices, we are left with current & dominant view of water in which everyone owns it & action to maintain it can only be undertaken communally. Why is it that we have too much dirty water in one place, not enough in another & yet be surrounded by an abundance of bottled water?

Is Water the next Natural Resource to be Exploited by the Market?

Turning water into an economic commodity & making money from water? Is this what Wall Street wants next? At the forefront of this firestorm is Peter Brabeck, chairman & former CEO of Nestle. In his view, citizens don’t have an automatic right to more than the water they require for mere “survival”, unless they can afford to pay for it.

Water is a commodity whose scarcity will have a profound effect on the world within the next few decades – this makes the reevaluation of our values regarding fresh water use not voluntary but mandatory. We will have to drastically change the way in which we view our freshwater as a resource.
