Is This The Critical Threshold For The Gold Rally To Continue?

10-year TIPS yield briefly went negative last week & the current yield is just 3 bps. TIPS yields have fallen around 75 basis points since the beginning of the year. This decline in yield has been accompanied by a gold rally from $1060 to $1342. This negative correlation between TIPS yields and gold prices has been persistent since 2003. TIPS yields will probably be negative if gold rallies above $1400.

Canada Sells Nearly Half Of All Its Gold Reserves

The latest data shows the total Canadian gold reserves have now dropped to 0.62 tonnes. The amount of gold the Canadian government holds has therefore been falling steadily since the mid-1960s, when over 1,000 tonnes were kept tucked away. Half of those reserves were sold by 1985, then through the 1990s & by last year, Canada’s gold reserves were down to just three tonnes.

US Exports 128 Tons Of Gold In Jan, Feb 2014 - Supply Deficit Increases

Not only did the United States export 128 metric tons of gold in the first two months of the year, its supply deficit continues to increase. Hong Kong and Switzerland imported 105 mt of gold in the same period. The overwhelming majority of U.S. gold exports are heading to Asia, India and the Middle East.
